General Questions

Carrier lookup basics

Contact support
What does the SIM pumping risk score measure?

Our carrier data provider maintains an SMS Pumping Risk Score that blends carrier block feedback, velocity analysis, and consortium intelligence. Carrier Reveal streams that exact signal so you can see whether a number is low, elevated, or critical risk and use the raw score to tune fraud models before artificial traffic drains your SMS spend.

How should I act on SIM pumping alerts?

Treat high-risk scores as a control point: slow or challenge OTP requests, rate-limit promotional sends, and re-check the number on subsequent logins. Our upstream guidance recommends flagging repeated high scores for manual review and measuring conversion impact so you can balance fraud loss with customer friction.

How does Identity Match verify a subscriber?

Identity Match compares the first name, last name, ZIP code, address, national ID, and date of birth you collect against the authoritative data sources our telecom provider references in its Lookup documentation. Carrier Reveal forwards the normalized identity payload alongside the hashed number so ownership can be confirmed before you enable payouts, SIM swaps, or account recovery.

How many Identity Match attempts can I run per number?

Each number receives five Identity Match attempts by default, matching our provider's recommended ceiling for regulated checks. If you exhaust the allotment—say a customer updates their address—you can purchase an identity top-up, which instantly resets the counter without forcing you to re-buy carrier data.

What caller name data is returned when I unlock?

The CNAM dataset we license supplies the registered caller name, record type (business vs residential), and any provider error codes. Carrier Reveal exposes the exact values so contact center teams can display branded caller ID, CRM admins can merge duplicates, and fraud teams can spot low-quality aliases before processing transactions.

Where is caller name available and why does it matter?

Caller name coverage currently focuses on United States and Canada PSTN routes, which is why most carrier data providers highlight CNAM primarily for North American traffic. Showing the stored name helps US customers recognize verified outreach, while the caller type flag tells you whether you are dealing with a consumer handset, a VoIP reseller, or a business switchboard.

What data is included when I unlock a phone number?

A paid unlock delivers the live carrier, MCC/MNC, line type, ported status, SIM pumping risk score, caller name record, and identity match state in one response. You receive the same structured payload documented for the upstream Lookup API, but without storing the raw number—Carrier Reveal stores only hashed tokens inside signed cookies.

What powers Carrier Reveal's carrier data?

We call an enterprise-grade carrier intelligence provider for carrier, CNAM, SIM pumping, and identity endpoints so you inherit telecom data fidelity. Our platform adds token-based access controls, pricing, batching, and UI workflows, letting you preview results safely and only unlock sensitive fields when your policy allows.

How do you keep carrier and identity data secure?

We never persist the raw phone number. Carrier Reveal hashes everything with SHA-256, stores unlocked hashes in HttpOnly, signed cookies for 90 days, and mirrors our provider's recommendation to scope identity submissions to the minimum fields required. That means your compliance and privacy teams can audit unlocks without handling unnecessary PII.

Technical Details

Deep dive into features

Do you store phone numbers?

No. We hash every E.164 number with SHA-256 and store only the hash in a signed, HttpOnly cookie for 90 days. Clearing cookies removes access.

How is SIM pumping risk scored?

We relay the SMS Pumping Risk Score from our carrier data provider so you can tag low, elevated, or critical risk. Pair it with your fraud rules to throttle, step-up, or block suspicious traffic.

How many Identity Match attempts do I get?

Five attempts per number by default, matching our provider guidance. Purchase an identity top-up to refresh attempts without re-buying carrier data.

Can I pay via PayPal?

Yes. Choose Stripe (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or PayPal at checkout. Both options are available on every unlock so finance can choose how to settle.

What is the max batch size?

Bulk carrier lookup supports up to your configured batch limit ({MAX_BATCH} by default). Contact us for larger batches or scheduled jobs.

Do I need an account?

No account is required. Enter a number, preview the format, and pay only if you need to unlock carrier, CNAM, and Identity Match data.

Carrier Data

Carrier lookup specifics

How do I identify carrier by phone number?

Enter the number into our phone carrier lookup, normalize it to E.164, then run an HLR + MNP query. This cell phone number lookup carrier flow returns the current carrier or provider, line type (mobile, landline, VoIP), and portability status so you can make routing or fraud decisions on live data.

Which network is this number on?

Run a real-time HLR lookup to see the current network operator. The result reflects ported numbers, so you get the carrier routing the number today, not just the original prefix.

Can a phone number change networks?

Yes, through Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Many countries allow subscribers to switch carriers while keeping their existing number. This means the prefix or area code no longer reliably indicates the current carrier. A real-time HLR lookup is the only way to get accurate, current carrier information for ported numbers.

What is number portability?

Number portability (also called Mobile Number Portability or MNP) is a regulatory feature that allows consumers and businesses to switch telecom providers without changing their phone number. This improves competition but makes prefix-based carrier identification unreliable. HLR lookups solve this by querying the live network routing tables.

Is a prefix always accurate for identifying the network?

No. Prefixes show the original carrier assignment, but with MNP, numbers can move to different networks. For example, a US number with a Verizon prefix could now be on T-Mobile if the subscriber ported. Always use a real-time carrier lookup for routing, fraud prevention, or compliance purposes.

Is cell provider lookup the same as phone provider lookup?

Yes in most operational workflows. Carrier lookup, network lookup, cell provider lookup, and phone provider lookup usually point to the same task: identify the operator currently routing the number. The important part is using live, MNP-aware data instead of old prefix charts.

Does this work for landlines and VoIP?

Yes. Our carrier lookup returns line type information (mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free) along with carrier details. VoIP and landline results may have limited carrier metadata compared to mobile numbers, but you'll still see the line type classification and any available routing information.

Is carrier lookup free?

You can preview the normalized E.164 format for free. To unlock full carrier details (current carrier, MCC/MNC, line type, MNP status, CNAM, SIM risk score), you pay a small per-lookup fee. No account required—just pay with Stripe or PayPal and unlock immediately.

What countries are supported?

Carrier Reveal supports carrier lookups for 200+ countries and territories through our carrier data provider. Coverage quality varies by region—countries with strong MNP infrastructure and HLR access (US, UK, Philippines, India, etc.) return the most detailed carrier information. Check our coverage map or try a sample lookup.

How accurate is carrier lookup?

Carrier lookups query live HLR and MNP databases maintained by carriers and regulators. Accuracy depends on the country and how quickly networks update their routing tables. For most regions, HLR data is updated within minutes to hours of a port or SIM activation. This is far more accurate than prefix-based guessing.

I searched for "carrierlookup" - is this the same process?

If your goal is carrier identification, yes. Regardless of whether you search for carrierlookup, lookup cell phone provider, or phone carrier lookup, the reliable method is the same: normalize to E.164 and run a real-time MNP-aware lookup before you trust the result.

Can I run a bulk carrier lookup?

Yes, we support bulk carrier lookups up to your configured batch limit. Paste a list, pay once, and receive detailed carrier information for all numbers. Ideal for cleaning contact databases, SMS campaign prep, and fraud screening workflows.
